Malaysia's heat and humidity mean an aircond unit here works harder, year-round, than one in a more temperate climate. There's no long "off season" for it to rest, and the moisture in the air speeds up mould and mineral buildup inside the unit. That changes how often it actually needs attention.
A realistic schedule
As a general guide for a typical home split-unit running daily:
- Filter clean — every 2 to 4 weeks. This is the one thing worth doing yourself: pull the filter out and rinse the dust off. It takes five minutes and keeps airflow up between professional visits.
- Basic professional clean — every 3 months. Covers the filter, a general inspection, and an airflow/performance check.
- Full chemical wash — every 6 to 12 months. This strips the coil and blower wheel of the buildup a basic clean can't reach, which is usually the real cause of a musty smell or weak cooling.
Signs you're overdue
Regardless of the calendar, a few signs mean it's time sooner rather than later: the unit takes noticeably longer to cool the room, there's a musty smell when it first switches on, you notice water dripping, or your electricity bill has crept up without a change in usage.
Commercial and industrial units
Offices, restaurants and factories usually run units longer hours under heavier load, so the same intervals above should be treated as a maximum, not a target — many commercial systems benefit from a chemical wash every 6 months rather than 12.
If you're not sure where your unit stands, a technician can tell you within a few minutes of inspection whether it needs a basic clean or a full wash.
